A shrill pulsating sound broke the silence of the basement’s dank bedroom. Old piping hung low from the ceiling, making a framework for the random spider web. This was where Ehron called home. A simple one bedroom apartment with a small kitchenette was his domain. At least it was away from his aunt. He made his own hours, lived his own life and had so since his early teens. Ehron had lived in this house with his aunt since he was barely old enough to walk. The untimely death of his parents had left him stranded with his only surviving relative. She had decided the best way to prepare him for the real world was to throw him in. It was a dream most high school boys would have given life and limb for, but Ehron knew the truth of living on your own.
A hand reached out for the snooze button but instead knocked the small, already battered clock onto the floor. With a clatter it hit the floor and, signaling its demise, the clock emitted a mournful wail. The extra loud screech was more than loud enough to wake the dead.
Rolling out of bed with a frustrated sigh, Ehron pulled the plug on the broken clock. As he crossed the room to head into the shower, he tossed his newly broken clock onto a pile atop his work bench; yet another project unfinished in a long list. He pondered if he would ever get around to fixing any of them.
Lost in thought of the events to come today, his shower was quick. Drying off, he glanced in the mirror; only his boyish features looked back. He was quite a baby faced young man, with a wild mop of short brown curls. He wished he could tame them, but they had always foiled all his attempts. With a shake of his head he realized he had no other distinguishing features.
“Plain.” He thought out loud. With another sigh he got dressed and headed out, stopping only to grab his ancient pocket watch. It was the only time keeping device he could never seem to kill. Checking the time he realized that if he didn’t hurry he be late after stopping to pick up Chris.
Running out to his beater of a 53’ Ford F100, he never noticed the two men across the street. Even if he hadn’t been in a hurry, he would have dismissed them as random people walking by. Little did he know they watched him exit his house and drive off into the distance before vanishing without a trace.
Samantha woke to the cat running up onto the bed and taking residence on her pillow. Something had spooked Riddle and he stood, hackles raised, staring at the door to her bedroom. Shaking her head at the goofy cat she started to roll over, before the sound of something crashing further in the house brought her to full attention. Was someone in the house?
Ever so quietly she grabbed the baseball bat she had resting beside the bed and slowly stalked toward her door, listening intently. Silence filled the house, this did not bode well. She softly pried the door open a bit more and peered down the hall. Nothing moved. Deep shadows loomed from here and there but no strange shapes were to be seen. Tip toeing as quietly as she could down the hall, she braced herself to look into the living room. Taking a tighter grip on the bat she leaned out, to an empty room.
The sight she could see brought a pout to her face. Her favorite pillow from the sofa was shredded to pieces, stuffing tossed here and there. Was it not enough she spilled her dinner on it tonight, so it had to be destroyed now too? A bit of anger began to creep into her, doubting a human attacker she began to wonder if she had left a window open and a raccoon had climbed into the house. She hoped not, they can be mean.
Readying her bat she continued her search into the kitchen and found the most damage of all. Chairs had been knocked over, a cabinet was open and what was left of her trash can lay strewn about the floor. Frustrated she forgot to check for the open windows and flicked the light on. Surveying the damage she began mumbling how she was gonna throttle her cat. Deciding to clean up and get back to bed she knelt down and grabbed for the trash can. As she did a small brown blur burst forth from the container and ran around the corner to her living room before she could get a good look at it. The shock of the critter threw her back onto her butt and had her scrambling back against the counters. A pungent smell of refuse and raw meat were left in its wake. As she began to push herself up she tore the side of her hand on a rough edge of the cabinet. Looking at the rough spot she noticed large chunks of the wood had been chewed away. It was at this time she realized that the trash can had also been torn apart, bits of the white plastic lay all around her. Looking back toward the living room she began to be a little afraid, what was that thing……
